According to a study made by a team of researchers from the Kangbuk Samsung Hospital in South Korea, getting too much or too little rest will eventually lead to hardening of the arteries. This stiffening of the blood vessels, if not treated, may be the initial trigger for a heart problem.

Many studies have proven the link between inadequate sleep and heart attack but none has proven that the initial cause of a cardiac problem, the hardening of the arteries as caused by an inadequate rest. This new research aims to probe deeply on the quality and the duration of sleep and how it affects the development of any heart disease.

The team of researchers had  47, 000 men and women with the average age of 42. They were asked to answer a questionnaire that would quantify their sleeping habits. After answering the questions, each of the participants was asked to undergo tests that would detect any lesions of calcium and plaque in their arteries. Based on the questionnaires, the participants’ average sleep was about 6.4 hours every night. About 84 percent of them rated their sleep as good. The team of researchers also grouped the respondents into short sleepers(those who got 5 hours of sleep or less) and long sleepers (those who had nine hours or more).

After tallying the gathered data, they discovered that those short sleepers had 50 percent more calcium deposits in their arteries while the long sleepers had about 70 percent more deposits compared to those who have been sleeping for about 7 hours. Considering the results of the research, the scholars concluded that having enough sleep every night is the best way to avoid any cardiac problems in the future. Getting less or more than the normal sleeping hours could be detrimental to health. Hence, people must start to train their sleep cycles from now on.
