A recent analysis of past researches have found out that increasing stress in workplaces could lead to a higher risk of getting a stroke.

The analysis stated that almost one in four jobs are “high strain” and people who work in high stress jobs have more chances of getting a stroke.

In order to reach the findings, the researchers observed almost 140,000 participants. After evaluation it was found out that people who had high-strain jobs were almost at 22% higher risk of getting a stroke than those people who worked at a lower-strain job. It was also found out that in certain cases, the chances of getting a stroke were as high as 58%.

Talking about the previous researches conducted on the same issue, Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China’s Dr. Dingli Xu said that previous studies conducted on work stress and the chances of stroke has not been consistent.

The researchers said that a lot of previous studies have also related high-stress jobs to chances of getting heart diseases and even high blood pressure. These studies determine which jobs are high-strain by using a well-established formula which explains high-strain jobs as ones with high demands but little control over the decision-making power.

The researchers evaluated the data of six different studies where the participants were followed up for almost three to 17 years. The study researchers also used an existing system to determine job stress on the ground of job demands, time pressure, mental load, coordination and control. The determiners stated that passive jobs like the ones of janitors and manual labourers had low demands and low control. Low stress jobs were like those of architects and scientists who have low demand but high control.

The findings of the research was published in the journal Neurology.
